Before Buying a Dog

Being a dog owner can be an enriching and rewarding experience. For many, a dog quickly becomes a treasured companion or even a member of the family. But the decision to adopt a dog is one that should never be taken lightly. No matter how much you want that adorable puppy, taking in any pet on impulse can lead to heartbreak. Here are a few things to consider before you adopt a dog:

Why do you want to get a dog? If you're adopting a dog for your children, be prepared to take over the pet care chores that they could quickly become bored with. Interested in a particular breed because it's "adorable" or "trendy"? Make sure you learn enough about the dog in question to make sure it is an appropriate choice for your lifestyle and your home.

Are you willing to commit yourself to the dog for the duration of its lifetime? Dog care involves both time and money. Can you afford to take a dog to the vet? Do you have plans for your dog if you're forced to relocate or you decide to start a family? Are you sure that you'll still be able to care for your dog ten or even fifteen years down the line? Far too many dogs are given up each year by people who are no longer able to take care of them.

If you've considered all the factors involved in caring for a dog and still feel that you were meant to be a dog owner, the next step is finding the dog that is right for you and preparing yourself for years of companionship and love.
